The wooden body ensures a wide sonic range.Meinl Wood Ibo Drum Review
Bought this from Amazon. It was nicely packed and delivered as promised. One important note: the one delivered is the newer version than the one shown on the site. The newer version (which can be seen on meinl's site) has vertical grooves in an organic pattern up and down the bulb part of the instrument. I don't know, but I think they only make the grooved one now. The newer model is the same color and makes the same sound, it's just groovy (couldn't resist).
Meinl is a German based company that makes fine percussion instruments, particularly world music instruments such as bongos, cajons, congas, and djembes. While fairly new to drumming generally, and to world percussion instruments specifically, I have purchased and played a few of the Meinl products and give them high marks overall. The products are typically crafted from excellent materials and have a very high sound quality. While there may be better makers of one or more instruments that Meinl makes, they are a good benchmark for almost every category of instrument they produce. Moreover, their website is helpful in that it provides videos of almost all of their production instruments being played so you can get a sense for what it will sound like.
As to the name Ibo, I have always heard this called an Udu, though someone will probably know the actual answer of whether there is a real difference between Ibo and Udu. Maybe Ibo is German for Udu or something. Ibo / Udu are typically made in wood, ceramic, and increasingly in fiberglass. The size and the materials make slight differences in the sound. The modern materials generate stronger and more predictable sounds, but to me, nothing feels better than the wood version. Think of it this way: if you prefer an acoustic guitar over electric, you probably fall in the wood Ibo / Udu camp too.
As to this Ibo / Udu, it sounds great. Can't say I have played many, but this one just makes you want to smile - its like being a kid again banging on things and learning about how different surfaces make different sounds. The large hole in the bulb area makes a deep buuup sound - really deep - like Barry White deep. buuup buuup buuup. The bulb itself makes a kind of nice slap when you hit it. And the bottom is flat and has a varying tone from the outside to the center. If you lay it sideways in your lap, you can play both the bulb and the bottom and get a nice tempo.
The instrument is much quieter than most typical percussion instruments. If you are playing it with others, it may need to be miked unless the other instruments are quiet too.
Get one of these things, re-awaken your inner three year old, and make some music.
